Nancy Stewart

Home / Nancy Stewart

Nancy Stewart (B.A., M.Ed.) has wide-ranging experience working with early years children and families across sectors, including a role in health education in a large urban primary care centre, establishing a non-maintained nursery, and in the maintained sector in a special needs nursery, nursery class, reception, children’s centre, and primary classes as teacher, early years team leader, assistant and deputy head.  Nancy has also worked in local authority advisory roles, has lectured on early years foundation degree courses and served as assessor for Early Years Professional Status.

As Senior Adviser with National Strategies, Nancy supported the EYFS review team in developing the EYFS 2012, and had a leadership role in national programmes  including Every Child a Talker.  She developed  training and materials and worked with local authorities and partners to establish strategic approaches and build practitioner skills in early communication and language.  She also has a strong interest in child development and playful early years pedagogy, and has developed national materials in this field.  Along with Helen Moylett, Nancy compiled the revised non-statutory guidance Development Matters in Early Years Foundation Stage (2012).  She is a skilled presenter who regularly receives enthusiastic feedback on her contributions to training and conferences.

Nancy has written and contributed to books on parenting and health including her book Your Baby: from birth to 18 months (Hamlyn), and for a number of years worked with parenting magazines as writer and editor of a monthly column and regular feature contributor.  Her  recent books include How children learn: The characteristics of effective early learning (Early Education 2011) covering the importance of supporting self-regulated learners in the revised EYFS and Understanding the Revised EYFS (with Helen Moylett, Early Education 2012), and she is a regular columnist for Nursery World.  She serves on the national executive of TACTYC, the Association for the Professional Development of Early Years Educators .
