Judith Stevens (B.Ed, M.Sc.) has a long and diverse career in early years education. This has included working in the non-maintained sector, as a childminder and in preschools and later in nursery and primary schools as a teacher, maths coordinator and early years team leader. Following a long career in local authority advisory roles, Judith took on a leadership role in national programmes including Every Child a Talker. As a Senior Adviser with the National Strategies she has developed a wide range of materials and worked extensively with LAs and key partners to develop aligned, strategic approaches to improving children’s early language development.
Judith is a prolific writer and has written numerous articles in a wide range of early years journals, magazines and books. Most recent books include: Maths Now: the definitive guide to maths in the early years and Maths in Stories (BEAM/Nelson Thornes 2009/2008). Following a period editing a university early years journal, Judith has been a member of the editorial board of Early Years Educator and a judge for the Early Years Awards for both EYE and Nursery World publications.
As an independent consultant Judith has provided extensive support and training across England and Wales. She has an interest in all aspects of mathematics, particularly maths outdoors and through stories, rhymes and role play, in addition to her passion for early language and communication.
